Nondestructive Testing & Research

Non Destructive Testing Services

Non destructive testing services (NDT services) are generally performed on-site or in an NDT laboratory. There are companies that specialize in performing non destructive testing services. RNDT is one of these companies.

Non Destructive Testing Services

non destructive testing servicesNon destructive testing services (NDT services) are generally performed on-site or in an NDT laboratory.  There are companies that specialize in performing non destructive testing services.  RNDT is one of these companies.  In general, non destructive testing services involves a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage.  The terms Nondestructive testing (NDT), Nondestructive examination (NDE), Nondestructive inspection (NDI), and Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) are commonly used to describe these type of testing services.  NDT is a highly valuable technique that can save both money and time in product evaluation because it does not permanently alter the article being inspected.

Non destructive testing services may rely upon use of electromagnetic radiation, sound, and inherent properties of materials to examine samples.  Probably the most common NDT method involves the use of industrial radiography or radiographic testing (x-ray testing).  Industrial radiography is the use of ionizing radiation to view objects in a way that cannot be seen otherwise.  Industrial radiography has grown out of engineering, and is a major element of non destructive testing. It is a method of inspecting materials for hidden flaws by using the ability of short X-rays and gamma rays to penetrate various materials.  Another common method (liquid penetrant testing) involves using dyes, fluorescent or non-fluorescent, in fluids for non-magnetic materials, usually metals. Another commonly used NDT method used on ferrous materials involves the application of fine iron particles (either liquid or dry dust) that are applied to a part while it is in an externally magnetized state (magnetic particle testing). The particles will be attracted to leakage fields within the test object, and form on the objects surface. Magnetic particle testing can reveal surface & some sub-surface defects within the part.

Additional information on non destructive testing services can be found on The American Society for Nondestructive Testing website.
